Pouta Paakkunainen
I’m Pouta, a student from Helsinki who loves people and animals. Photography for me is a social form of art. A camera works as a means to get closer to uncovering different people, groups, and perspectives.
In my untitled report-style picture series under the subject “Borders and Boundaries”, I aimed to uncover the cultural complexities between man and animal.
These cultural phenomena have been taught to us humans from birth, but other animals have no say in the matter. Therefore, I wanted to shine some light on the subject through this project, giving the otherwise voiceless animals some human understanding.
Pigs are food. Filthy animals. They belong in cages! But dogs are our friends, someone to share a life, even a bed with.
Adults don’t often seem to consider these juxtapositions, because it’s become the norm – something that’s always been. Children on the other hand learn what their taught, but what would happen if we taught them to consider life outside of our comfort zone?
